The Mississippi River
(bordering the state of Wisconsin) Grade Level/Subject: Grade 2, Social Studies Overview: The importance of the Mississippi River to the state of Wisconsin concentrating on the cities that border the river. Objectives: To show students with the importance of the Mississippi River in the state of Wisconsin, pertaining to tourism, and commercial purposes. Materials: Maps of Wisconsin drawing paper colored pencils rulers dictionary Pictures of barges, lock and dams, and recreational boats Addresses of the department of tourism and commerce of Wisconsin, also of the different cities if they have their own. Procedures: Given a map the students will label the Mississippi River and the large cities that border it. The students will write letter to the Department of tourism and commerce of Wisconsin and the city if possible. The class will be making a book about the cities along the Mississippi including information about tourism and commercial imports and exports. Each student will make two pages for the book one including tourism in their chosen city, and the next page will tell about any product the city products and exports and what kind of things the city imports. We will also study the different kinds of river transportation, and we will take a field trip on the local riverboat. On the field trip we will travel through a lock and damn and of course we will learn about those prior to the trip. Conclusion: The students will be knowledgeable in the tourism and commercial purposes of different Wisconsin cities lining the Mississippi River. Also they with know the different kinds of river transportation, and how a lock and dam functions. |
